The LIFE GREEN ADAPT project, co-funded by the EU LIFE Programme (LIFE20 CCA/ES/001795), continues to advance innovative blue-green infrastructure solutions that enhance the resilience of waste infrastructure to climate change. Through the development of ecosystem-based approaches aligned with circular economy principles, the project aims to mitigate landfill erosion, treat polluted leachate and runoff, and reduce the risks posed by climate-induced natural hazards.
3rd Innovation Workshop and site visit in As Somozas
Project partner ISLE hosted the 3rd Innovation Workshop in A Coruña, Spain, bringing together project partners and key stakeholders from sectors including waste management, wastewater treatment, and academia. The event coincided with a guided visit to the project’s demonstration site in As Somozas, providing attendees with first-hand insights into the technologies being validated.
During the workshop, project partners presented updates on LIFE GREEN ADAPT’s cutting-edge technologies, including:
- Bio-technosoils – created from organic and inorganic wastes recovered from landfills, these materials stabilize landfill topography, reduce erosion, and improve soil water retention by mimicking natural soil structures.
- Liquid Stream Technologies – a suite of treatment wetland systems such as Floating Treatment Wetlands, Aerated Vertical-Flow Treatment Wetlands with Geopolymers, and Electroactive Biofilm-based Treatment Wetlands designed to bioremediate landfill leachate and runoff, significantly reducing pollutants and heavy metals.
- Vulnerability Assessment Tool – a digital tool that quantifies and visualises climate risks at landfill sites before and after implementation of project technologies, supporting evidence-based resilience planning.
Collectively, these innovations promote circularity, enhance climate resilience, and present strong potential for replication across other industrial and environmental sectors.

Validation, maintenance, and next steps
The 3rd Innovation Workshop served as a milestone event highlighting the validation and maintenance plans for project innovations as LIFE GREEN ADAPT approaches completion in December 2025. Discussions focused on ensuring long-term success and developing strategies for replication, transfer, and scaling of the technologies beyond the project’s lifetime.
Stakeholders feedback gathered during the workshop emphasised the importance of strengthening the robustness of project results, exploring cross-sector applications, and optimising technology design and performance. These insights will support the final design of post-project roadmaps, guiding the consortium’s continued collaboration and market engagement after 2025.
About LIFE GREEN ADAPT
LIFE GREEN ADAPT is a collaborative EU-funded initiative (LIFE20 CCA/ES/001795) that integrates blue-green infrastructure and ecosystem-based approaches to manage flash flooding and runoff caused by heavy rainfall while reducing the risks of fires and explosions caused by droughts and heatwaves. The project aims to strengthen the climate resilience of waste management systems across Europe and to drive the transition toward more sustainable and adaptative waste infrastructure through the application of circular economy principles.
The partners of the LIFE GREEN ADAPT Consortium include AIMEN, LIMNOS, FACTOR, UPC, AU, XILOGA and ISLE.
