Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and Turkey's IC Ictas Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. plan to build a seawater desalination plant in Azerbaijan to produce drinking water, as announced by Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy to the international information group Interfax.

"The consortium led by ACWA Power placed first based on the technical and financial evaluation of the proposals submitted to the competition. Israel's IDE Water Assets Ltd. placed second and the United Arab Emirates' Metito Utilities Ltd. placed third in the competition," the ministry stated.

The project includes plans to establish a facility capable of producing 300,000 cubic meters of water per day at the Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park, funded through investments by the consortium. The construction phase is expected to take 2.5 years.

The agreement outlines a 27.5-year duration for the project, after which the plant's management will be transferred to Azerbaijan.

"The project's goals are to meet the growing demand for drinking water in Baku and on the Absheron Peninsula, diversify fresh water sources, incentivize international experience and transfer of technology in the area of supplying drinking water, as well as attract foreign investment," the Ministry of Economy explained.

The ministry has not disclosed the investment amount.

Established in 2004, ACWA Power specializes in water desalination and green hydrogen production, managing a portfolio of 94 projects worth $97 billion.

IC Ictas Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret brings over 50 years of expertise in large-scale projects across sectors such as industry, infrastructure, energy production, investment, and tourism.
