Global water-treatment specialist IDE Technologies has been awarded an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to design and build a seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant at Manori, on Mumbai’s western coast. The facility’s initial capacity will provide 200 million litres per day (MLD) of potable water.
In addition to design and construction, the agreement includes a long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) contract: IDE will operate the plant for 20 years after commissioning, providing sustained delivery of drinking water to the city.
The Manori plant is being built with scalability in mind: the intake-outfall system and storage infrastructure are designed to eventually support a capacity of up to 400 MLD, allowing a future doubling of output with minimal additional disruption.
For project execution, IDE will collaborate with the local engineering firm GVPR Engineers Limited. The plant will use seawater drawn from an offshore intake several kilometres from the coastline — an approach intended to minimize environmental impact while delivering a stable, “climate-resilient” freshwater supply to Mumbai’s growing population.
According to IDE’s leadership, the plant represents a substantial step toward bolstering Mumbai’s water security — reducing dependence on traditional water sources and making the city more resilient to climate-driven variability in rainfall.
