The Government of Western Australia has announced an AUD 81 million (approximately USD 54 million) investment to expand the Kwinana Water Reclamation Plant (KWRP), increasing the supply of recycled water for industrial users while supporting long-term water security and climate resilience.
Located in the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth, the facility has been operating since 2004 and currently produces nearly 17 million litres of recycled water per day for industrial customers. The planned expansion will add a further 10 million litres daily — equivalent to around four Olympic-sized swimming pools — representing a 60% increase in production capacity. The project is also expected to extend the plant's operational life by 25 years.
The KWRP uses advanced microfiltration and reverse osmosis technologies to treat wastewater from nearby water and wastewater facilities, producing high-quality recycled water for industrial processes and cooling applications. According to the government, increasing recycled water availability will help reduce reliance on groundwater and potable water supplies while providing a cost-effective alternative for industry.
The additional capacity is intended to support both existing industries and emerging sectors, including green iron and steelmaking, battery mineral processing, and fuels and energy projects. The Kwinana Industrial Area forms part of the Western Trade Coast, a major industrial precinct that contributes around AUD 20 billion annually to Australia's economy and supports approximately 30,000 jobs.
Construction of the project's first phase, delivered by BMD Constructions, is nearing completion. The second phase, involving the construction of a new three-kilometre supply pipeline, is scheduled to begin in July.
Premier Roger Cook said: "Expanding the Kwinana Water Reclamation Plant will provide industry with a greater supply of high-quality recycled water needed to help grow and diversify our economy."
Water Minister Don Punch added: "Recycling wastewater offers a cost-effective way to meet this demand while protecting precious scheme water and groundwater. This upgrade not only supports industry but strengthens Western Australia's long-term environmental sustainability."
