Vodafone wins €25m deal to supply 315,000 NB-IoT water meters in Spain

  • Vodafone wins €25m deal to supply 315,000 NB-IoT water meters in Spain
  • Canal de Isabel II is working on the digitalization of the integral water cycle in the Community of Madrid, and in the coming years will offer remote reading service to its more than 1.5 million customers in the region.

About the entity

Vodafone has been awarded the largest of the four lots tendered by Canal de Isabel II in the contract for the supply of water meters with NB-IoT (Narrow Band Internet of Things) integrated in them and telecommunications services for their automatic remote reading. The awarded lot is worth more than 25 million euros and will involve the supply of 315,000 meters and the deployment of IoT connectivity for the next 5 years, according to a press release by Vodafone.

Thus, Vodafone will provide Canal with both the meters and their connectivity, incorporating cutting-edge technology to meet the digitization needs of Canal de Isabel II. The IoT meters, manufactured by Sagemcom, perform hourly readings with daily sending of information, which is 1,440 times more data than the current process of manual reading every 2 months. This significant amount of information has an important impact both upstream in the water cycle process, as well as on the consumer.

Canal de Isabel II, the public company responsible for the integral water cycle in the Community of Madrid, is immersed in a project to renew its meter fleet that will allow the implementation of remote reading in 100% of the users (more than 6 million people in Madrid).

Canal's commitment to the digitization of the final phase of water distribution to its users will bring the following benefits: better knowledge of water uses and water use efficiency, increased transparency in water management, contributing to the improvement of environmental aspects and generating highly qualified technical employment.

Daniel Barallat, IoT Director of Vodafone Spain, emphasizes: "The control and proper management of water use in Spain is a constant challenge and of vital importance today. We put our cutting-edge technology at the service of Canal de Isabel II to actively contribute to better conservation of natural resources and more efficient water management in Madrid."

Beyond the supply of equipment and connectivity that Vodafone will provide to Canal de Isabel II as part of this contract, the company has created the Vodafone Water Metering solution to meet the digitization needs of water management companies. The solution makes it possible to digitize the consumption metering process of households, industries and public entities through the use of smart and connected devices, which collect a greater amount of information, and through the subsequent processing of this information with data analytics tools.
