ASTERRA, an Israel-based geospatial and Earth observation company, uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) to pioneer innovative solutions for identifying and mitigating pipeline leaks.

By leveraging AWS, ASTERRA can delve beneath the Earth's surface without the need for disruptive ground excavations, employing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery, patented algorithms, and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect leaks, evaluate pipes, and pinpoint moisture near vital installations, explains a recent article by Amazon.

This collaboration has enabled ASTERRA to verify over 100,000 leaks since 2017, preserving a staggering 368 billion gallons of water and curbing 920,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy consumption while mitigating 235,520 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

Historically reliant on on-premises infrastructure, ASTERRA has been encountering bottlenecks in processing increasing data volumes and delivering timely results as demand surged. However, Amazon explains that the migration of workloads to AWS has empowered ASTERRA to scale dynamically, hosting satellite imagery processing pipelines and its EO Discover platform, which underpins flagship solutions such as MasterPlan, Recover, and EarthWorks.

ASTERRA's Recover solution, powered by AWS, uses L-band polarimetric SAR sensors to swiftly locate and analyze underground pipe leaks, facilitating expedited and cost-effective repairs. Furthermore, the EarthWorks solution monitors moisture accumulation around critical infrastructure, preempting potential failures and safeguarding communities from the repercussions of floods and infrastructure damage.

By leveraging AWS-managed services such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), ASTERRA has streamlined operations, reduced overheads, and accelerated innovation efforts.

ASTERRA’s collaboration with AWS has permitted the company to work with over 600 customers across 64 countries.
