Metro Pacific Water (MPW) has officially commenced the construction of the Metro Iloilo Desalination Facility, which will become the largest desalination plant in the Philippines, according to The Manila Times.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 21 in Barangay Ingore, La Paz, attended by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., Metropac Water Investments Corp. (MPIC) Chairman Manuel Pangilinan, and Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
MPW stated that the P5.5-billion facility will be capable of converting 66.5 million liters of saltwater into potable water daily, helping to meet the increasing demand for clean drinking water in Iloilo.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to provide a reliable and consistent water supply to more than 400,000 residents, utilizing advanced reverse osmosis technology.
MPW President Cristopher Andrew Pangilinan underscored the company's dedication to offering sustainable water solutions to Iloilo communities.
"This innovative and sustainable desalination facility will provide a long-term solution to the water challenges of Iloilo," he said.
He also highlighted that the plant will ensure a steady supply of potable water even during droughts or periods of low rainfall, reducing dependence on unpredictable freshwater sources such as rivers and groundwater.
With Iloilo’s economy expanding, Treñas emphasized the importance of investing in sustainable infrastructure to support the city's present and future needs.
"Our beloved city is experiencing tremendous growth. Our economy is thriving, driven by key sectors such as our BPOs and tourism, while our population continues to expand. But with growth come great challenges—particularly in ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for our communities," he said.
"This plant will ensure that as Iloilo City continues to grow, we can provide a consistent and dependable water supply for all residents," he added.
The desalination plant is a joint initiative between MPW, the consortium of SUEZ, and Jemco.
MPW, a subsidiary of MPIC, specializes in water and wastewater infrastructure projects outside Metro Manila and across Asia. SUEZ, a France-based company with over 50 years of experience in water and waste management solutions, will oversee the construction and operation of the facility. Meanwhile, Jemco, a leading local construction firm, will collaborate with SUEZ on the project's development.
